Meta-PokéBase Q&A

I've been reading a lot of old Meta posts recently, and one thing that always seems to come up is the Admin system. It's a good way to prevent spam/duplicate/generally stupid posts, but most of the Editors and Mods describe it as more of a burden.

So why not make it so Experts can Admin? Experts are generally experienced (Whether handpicked or just by reaching 6k, that takes a lot of work) and can probably sort out the useless posts from the useful. From what I've seen with my limited American hours perspective, there's usually about 2 Experts active at any given time. New users could get their posts approved quicker, and it would lighten the load on our Editors and Mods (who have lives outside of Pokebase).

And, really, is Admin a huge privilege? Or, one that can't be extended? Just wondering. (Oh, and, it should be able to be accessed after a Mod directly promotes them to Expert.)

Sincerely,
Some random registered user

There was an expert a while back who abused the very little powers that experts have and got banned for it. I don’t know how admin works, but it seems like if we let experts do it, it may be harder to pick up on the abuse of power and cause more errors. It would also warrant more serious consideration for who gets expert (imagine if ETN got enough points in RMT to get expert before his ban) :P

But, then again, it also depends on how much the mod team trusts us experts. One expert may be more trustworthy than another.

One of the mods (I forget who) has been talking about wanting to promote more experts to editors in general, to solve some of the issues like this. :P
'There was an expert a while back who abused the very little powers that experts have and got banned for it.'

thou have mentioned thy marvelous Gligurr
That is true, but have there been any other Experts that abused their powers (that we know of)? Maybe Gligurr was an isolated case. How would abuse of power work with Admin? Not letting some people post? It would probably be easy to spot if another Expert/Editor/Mod was watching. Those are valid concerns though.
And that mod is PX I believe
giving any amount of power to people for reaching an arbitrary amount of internet points is already a terrible idea as it is, as demonstrated in the past. if there were such a dire need to lighten the load of the current mods, then new ones can be appointed.

Moderators can assign and remove the expert title. It's not automatic.

You're basically asking to make Experts into Editors. If we wanted or needed more editors, we would ask to promote more editors (which we will do soon!).

Expert exists as a "I have put a lot of knowledge and time into the Pokebase and now I can edit content as a reward / to help more!" title. In that it's supposed to be low stakes and anyone can achieve it.

Editor's are curated and trusted by the site admin. The entire purpose of Editors is that they're trusted specifically enough to be allowed to use the admin section.

What I'm trying to say is that you're basically asking for the removal of either a.) The role and function of editors or b.) The standards and quality assurance of (what would then basically be) editors by allowing practically anyone to perform that role. Even if we could just not promote someone to Expert to prevent then from using admin...then would we create a new title to reward people who hit 6000? What would the point even be?

And then we would have to go back through every single already existing expert and deem them worthy or not.

Tldr users are promoted to Editor if we think they're qualified and we need them. Transfering powers to experts means that they won't necessarily be qualified or trustworthy and creates other issues too.
