It's not like they haven't done this before.
Think of the (permanent) evolutions by affection which, as far as I recall, only happened with a handful of 'mons (crobat, togepi and a few others) and was never touched upon ever since.
Or how you had both bikes by the click of a button in Gen 4, which was a genius improvement, but that too is gone.

Plus is not likely they won't do Megas anymore, it's probably just another gimmick to one up their previous innovation and allow them to sell the different copies of the games due to exclusives.
Unless, of course, they just release Z with everything in it, which is an incredibly step back for marketing but is sure to make the fans happy.
I, for once, would be square set on buying it if they added a hat that resembles a Super Saiyan.
