I don't know how Macs work, so I honestly have no idea if resizing windows is like it is on.... Windows. But there are fullscreen Options under "Video"...

I can resize my windows fine, and I'd expect no less for Mac.

VBA has the same screen size as the device the ROM is played on, so no. It's not because of your Mac

Okay so, assuming you already have your rom downloaded, you just open up the emulator, click File, and then Open. then search for the rom file and click it.
Alternatively you can open the emulator and drag the rom from a folder/desktop into it

If you just get a white screen, you need to go to Options -> Emulator -> Save Type -> Flash 128K -> File -> Reset

also please remember not to displace or delete your save file(s) once you get one -_-
