Pokémon Rate My Team

Hey everyone, first RMT in a long time and first gen 7 RMT. And oddly it's not LC. I thought it only right to at least try to do OU for a while rather than just pretend it doesn't exist and honestly it's quite fun! But it's hard to strike a balance between viable and fun/different. I think I did it here though, at least in part.

Gengar is my joint favourite Pokemon (other being Weavile) but after it's nerf it was relegated to UU. It still had a lot of potential however, and after messing around in the damage calc I found out that Specs can 2HKO almost the entire tier. It needed support obviously, but it was still pretty amazing. There wasn't much of a speed creep this gen, so Gengar's not too slow. I wanted to build a team around it! I figured that I needed a wall to beat special wallbreakers, NEEDED rocks around for some vital 2-shots and fast mons to deal other fast mons. That being said let's get into it!

Gengar

Gengar @ Choice Specs
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast

The star in question, this beast is a 2-Shot machine. Nothing can switch in. Skarmory, Celesteela, Chansey after Knock Off, Buzzwole, MSable all lose. It also beats all relevant faeries bar Koko 1v1. To put it plainly, it really pressures bulky teams and forces them to think about their switch ins, weakening to the extent that my cleaners can easily defeat them.

Landorus

Landorus-Therian @ Rockium Z
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Knock Off

An awesome wincon and powerful wallbreaker. A pocket check for metal chickens and other landos, providing Knock Off support and surprising switch ins and cleaning weakened teams after their revenge killer is gone. it also beats common Pursuit users like MukA without too much fear, only disliking repeated TTar switches. I'm thinking of using HP Ice for other Landos but a +1 Continental Crush will beat them anyway.

Toxapex

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Def / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Haze
- Scald
- Toxic Spikes
- Recover

Toxa was added as a good counter to Mega Zard Y, as Special Defence sets take jack squat from Solar Beam. It's also a good fairy resist, losing only to Koko. Haze is for Volcarona and if something randomly wants to set up in my face. Scald for burns and to discourage switching, TSpikes for extra residual damage to help out Gengar. Recover because Recover.

Pheromosa

Pheromosa @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 224 Atk / 32 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Ice Beam
- U-turn
- Rapid Spin

EVs are weird because they make Phero's attack one point higher than speed, so Beast Boost turns into Moxie. Scarf means it stills outspeeds literally everything. HJK is a super powerful STAB. Come in on a weakened mon, outspeed it and snowball into an ultra beast (huehuehue). Ice Beam to revenge kill Landots and Dragons. U-Turn momentum is invaluable. Rapid Spin because there's no other option here for removal currently so I might a well.

Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Thunder Wave
- Gyro Ball

Ferrothorn patches up some needed weaknesses, taking little to nothing from any fairies, psychic and electric types, providing crucial hazards and speed control - both of which being very useful for Gengar, and beating scarf Tapu Lele. Gyro Ball because I'm lacking steel coverage and need it more than Grass right now.

Weavile

Weavile @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard
- Icicle Crash

Orginally Greninja, Weavile compresses being a Pursuit trapper, a Priority user and generally a super fast mon into one. Ice coverage is useful on this team for beating bulky grass and ground types, while Pursuit trapping lets me beat threats to Gengar. Knock Off support is needed and appreciated too, because screw passive recovery and eviolite. The knock off spamming and threat of Ice types and trapping means Weavile heavily pressures offensive teams.

Nice team, but I don't think that Pheromosa is good as a rapid spinner.
It's not a spinner per se more just having Rapid Spin on it since I don't need poison coverage anyway and I didn't want to use another teamslot. Honestly the whole team archetype is wrong but this version is way too fun.
If Gengar is so overpowered in OU, what happens if you use it in UU?
It's not overpowered in OU at all. It has lots of checks, isn't all that fast anymore, needs support to avoid getting OHKO'd immediately and it can't switch in. It's only strong once it's in safely because nothing in the tier wants to switch in to it, making it great versus bulk. I'd assume the same applies for UU. hard to fit in onto teams but is great versus bulky mons.
