You're not passive! Everyone has goals and everyone does things towards those goals. Whatever you feel as a goal you should continue to pursue until it no longer brings happiness. If it doesn't bring happiness, explore

I actually want specialized binoculars things that clip onto my glasses, but they’re super expensive. They’re about $8k and require me going across the province for specialized testing and training, and it’ll take about half a year. So, they’re a little out of my budget right now

The risk of addiction is satisfaction.

You get the urge to get a hit. You start chasing, prying at it, trying to get it over and over but you never hit. As you try more and more, you don't want to give up, the more time you seep into it. FINALLY, you get there, you're pulling and pulling, you're at the edge's end, but suddenly, you lose it!
So now you're at it again and again, chasing satisfaction, that brief spurse of happiness you just felt. Now you don't care how long you've been at it, how much time you're sinking into this, what you could be doing. Every pull, every grasp, every touch, you think about how you got here, where you're at right now, where you could go, but none of it matters. All that matters is SATISFACTION!
So you try and try again, every cramp, every beat of pain, it almost hurts! Wave it off! Don't let it slow you down! You gotta keep going until finally, you get ahold of it. You barely can even feel it but you're at the hit! Slowly and carefully, you pull gently, you lightly nudge it, for as much satisfaction as it brings you, you want it gone! You want to move on! But once finally you get it, pull it out... it's not satisfying. Your grip wasn't pronounced, the resist of the tug wasn't there. You hit satisfaction, but you couldn't grasp it, you lost it right there!

And so, you go, chasing another, hoping that maybe, another urge leaps out at you, that sensation briefs your fingers once more. You scour the plains, hoping for another opportunity that could bring you satisfaction once again.
