My Top Five Video Games of 2014:
5. Any game that isn't Depression Quest or Revolution60
-Screw you Zoe Quinn, and screw you corrupt gaming journalists. This year saw the rise of GamerGate, and as a strong supporter of the movement, I dedicate a spot to it. The ride never ends, and we're going into 2015 with the force of a great typhoon. With ethical guidelines being updated, corruption exposed, and trash like Gawker bleeding out, as well as many charities supported and allies made, GamerGate has made too huge an impact on gaming not to mention.
4. Kirby Triple Deluxe
-The best Kirby game since Crystal Shards (if we're not counting Super Star Ultra). Like most Kirby games, it is packed full of value. A great and enjoyable single-player that can be played again as King Dedede, a Smash Bros mini-game that is probably the best mini-game included in a Kirby title (which is saying something as most of you Kirby fans probably know), and a nice rhythm game too. It's a fun iteration on Kirby, a series that I've always loved the hell out of.
3. Card City Nights
-My guess is you haven't heard of it. It's a tiny indie game that didn't get a lot of attention. But it is a game I replayed four times in a row before they made some bad patches that kinda made the game less fun. :( It's a single player only CCG, inspired by the classic Pokemon TCG for the Game Boy. We don't get enough of those, with the last one I've played being Yu-gi-oh: The Sacred Cards a long long time ago. It's incredibly cheap, and worth picking up if you like card games.
2. Super Smash Bros
-While I don't feel it was as huge a change as original to Melee or Melee to Brawl, I don't really care because it is Smash. And Smash is just a whole load of fun to play. With some fun and interesting new characters, as well as a bunch of different game modes and stages, including an improved stage builder, Smash is an easy recommendation.
1. Hearthstone
-The only reason I stopped playing is because I do not have the brain capacity to stay competitive at both this game and Magic the Gathering. Hearthstone comes into a crowded field and shakes things up by adding a fair degree of random elements to the game, which in my opinion is great because I believe that taking calculated risks is more fun than seeing my Opponent going "Counterspell, Mana Leak, Daze, Force of Will, etc". The Arena mode is the meat of the game, and is comparable to Magic the Gathering's drafting, in that you have a selection of cards to choose from and you build the best deck. Price wise, it is the cheapest CCG to get into, and after spending around $20 or $30, I was able to not spend much more money because I sustained myself through quest rewards and my Arena winnings. It also has released a ton of content since I last played, and it's a game that I really want to get into, even though I can't since Magic is more social, and I need more social things to do in order to improve myself.
