Pokémon field moves
All the attacks below can be used outside of battle,
in the field. Some are used for story progression,
while others are simply useful to have.
Cut is used to tear down small trees in your path. It can only be used with the appropriate Gym Badge.
Defog can be used to clear foggy areas (fog will return upon leaving and re-entering the area). So far only Sinnoh has experienced foggy weather. In Diamond & Pearl, Defog cannot be used outside of battle before obtaining the Fen Badge (Pastoria City Gym); In Platinum it cannot be used before the Relic Badge (Hearthome City Gym).
Dig can be used to escape from caves. The player is returned to the location at which they entered, just like using an Escape Rope.
While surfing, if you happen over a dark patch of water, you can dive below the surface and explore underwater. It can only be used with the appropriate Gym Badge.
Two regions have areas where you can use Dive: Hoenn (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and the remakes Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire) and Unova (Black, White, Black 2, White 2) and the move is an HM in those games.
Flash lights up dark caves. In the original games dark caves made the screen almost completely black, whereas in later games you can always see a very short distance around you; Flash merely expands that circle. In the games it is an HM, it can only be used with the appropriate Gym Badge.
Fly allows you to fly instantly to any PokéCenter you have already visited during the course of the game (or certain other prominent locations). It can only be used with the appropriate Gym Badge.
In Gold, Silver, Crystal, and the remakes HeartGold & SoulSilver, Headbutt can be used to shake trees. Often wild Pokemon will fall out; some Pokemon are only obtainable via this method.
In the field, using Milk Drink will take away 20% of the user's maximum HP and give it to another Pokemon. (It is unusable if the user's HP is below 20%.)
Rock Climb can be used to ascend rocky paths, in Generation 4 only. It can only be used with the appropriate Gym Badge.
Rock Smash breaks certain rocks that may be in your path. Smashing rocks may uncover wild Pokemon or items. Breakable rocks appear in Generations 2-4 and Generation 6. Only rocks in Johto/Hoenn reveal Pokémon/items when smashed.
In Generation 3, Secret Power allows the user to create their own secret base when used on weeping willow-like trees or indented walls.
In the field, using Soft-Boiled will take away 20% of the user's maximum HP and give it to another Pokemon. (It is unusable if the user's HP is below 20%.)
Strength is used to move large boulders in the field. Boulders can only be pushed, not pulled. It can only be used with the appropriate Gym Badge.
From Generation 5 onwards, boulders moved by Strength are often used to create shortcuts through caves and routes.
Surf is used to cross water. While surfing, wild Pokémon may appear. It can only be used with the appropriate Gym Badge.
From Generation 3 onward it's possible to fish while surfing; previously one could only fish at the water's edge.
While standing in grass, Sweet Scent will make a Pokémon automatically appear.
If the user is outside, Teleport will instantly transport you back to the last Pokemon Center you visited. It does not work in caves or buildings. In Generation 4 it does not work in any town or city, only in routes.
Allows a surfing Pokémon to ascend a waterfall. In Diamond, Pearl & Platinum, Waterfall is required to descend waterfalls, but in other games it is not.
Whirlpool allows you to cross swirling maelstroms in your path. Only Generation 2 and Generation 4 have whirlpools that can be passed.
