If you reel a Pokemon in too late, is the streak broken?

So, there have been several times I've tried chain fishing (I really don't have the patience for that, but I tried), and often I reeled it in too late, so I assumed the chain was broken, and ragequit. But now I'm curious as to whether the chain was actually broken.
