Game Boy Advance SP Cord not working?

Question

Whenever I try to trade and battle between Pokemon games in Generation III, it says that there is a communication error right after I enter the room. It started when we started playing the GBA games on our DS Lites. Does it have something to do with that?

EDIT: I AM USING THE GBA TO TRADE. THOSE WHO ARE ASSUMING I AM TRYING TO PLUG THE CORD INTO THE DS ARE WRONG.

Its probably because you're using a ds instead of the actual gameboy SP. The ganeboy link cord and the ds aren't really compatible.
