If you got tyranitarite via trade, would you be able to activate it if you didn't upgrade your mega ring yet?
using a traded megastone received post-game should work regardless. The upgraded mega ring only enables you to find mega stones on the ground. It doesn't prevent you from using mega stones received post-game.
