Why were my Jewels seemingly wasted?

Question

In Pokemon Shuffle, I used a Jewel to replenish 5 hearts. But instead of doing that, it just added 5 to the number beside the heart count! What's up with that?
Note: latest update.

No need to worry. I believe they did that to keep purchased hearts and regular hearts separated. Why? I don't know. They still work like normal hearts, so there's no need to worry.

it's a nice change because you can store up "special" hearts while still being able to accumulate hearts from waiting half an hour

So...hypothetically if I had zero hearts on the left and 16 hearts on the right I would still have 16 hearts to use...?

Yes, its actually helpful since you can still gain more hearts while you use those 16 hearts
