Why can’t I evolve my Applin into Appletun?

Question

I play Pokémon Sword and have the Sweet Apple (the item used to evolve applin into appletun). But the item and applin is “Incompatible”.

Appletun is a Shield exclusive while Flapple is a Sword exclusive. To get Appletun, you'll need to trade with another person that has Shield.

I think you mean to say that Applin can only evolve to Appletun in Shield?  Because Applin is not a Trade Evo...

You can evolve Applin into either evolution in either game if you have the corresponding Item, as the items are the only things locked as Version-Exclusives, not the evolutions themselves. The only thing that would make it Incompatible is if it's holding an Everstone. So... is it holding an Everstone maybe?
