How does Colbur Berry work with Knock Off?

Question

I know a lot of ghost types run Colbur Berry to take less damage from knock off. If it gets hit by knock off, does it deal double damage because it was holding an item, or does the berry activate first, and not deal double damage because it isn’t holding an item anymore?

The berry is activated first and Knock Off doesn't do double damage.
