How do I rematch trainers in ORAS?

I don’t even know if anyone’s still playing alpha sapphire anymore, but I just got it second hand and I want to rematch trainers. I know how to use trainer’s eye to see which trainers can be rematched, but when I walk up to them, they won’t battle me. For reference, I’m training to beat the first gym leader so it’s possible that I need my first gym badge to do rematches. Thanks in advance!

In the areaNav top left there is a trainer looking button. Click that and it will tell you if trainers that you battled can battle again.
