Alt. Title: How do you reduce a Pokemon's stat by three stages?

by
One way is Simple beam + a stat lowering move like screech, but that would lower it by 4. You would get the same message though.

This answer assumes you're playing National Dex AG, to account for all moves, Pokemon, and Z-moves. Whether these strategies are viable in NatDex AG is another question entirely.

One of the easiest ways to lower your own stats by exactly three stages is to have or transfer the Ability Contrary to your Pokemon with the use of Role Play, Entrainment, Skill Swap, Power of Alchemy, Receiver, Transform, or Imposter. With Contrary, proceed to use one of the following:

  • Fell Stinger (+3 Attack if target is KOed)
  • Z-Splash (+3 Attack)
  • Cotton Guard (+3 Defense)
  • Tail Glow (+3 Special Attack)

As these are the only moves that raise a Pokemon's stat by three, they will be the only ones to lower a stat by exactly three when under the influence of Contrary. The same "severely fell" message displays on stat losses greater than three, but the only move to give more than three stages is Belly Drum, which gives its own unique message -- "[Pokemon] cut its HP and maximized its Attack!", even with Contrary.

If you're looking to severely drop your opponent's stats, the easiest way is to change their Ability to Simple, whether by Ability exchange or the move Simple Beam. Simple doubles the effects of any stat changes, so if a Pokemon were to ordinarily lose one Defense from Close Combat, it would instead lose two Defense. This means that any move that lowers a stat by two or more will result in the "severely fell" message. Unfortunately, as there are no moves that lower a stat by 1.5 stages, an exact modifier of -3 is unattainable with Simple.

Here are all moves that, when inflicted on a Pokemon with Simple, will result in the desired tooltip:

  • Charm (-2 Attack)
  • Feather Dance (-2 Attack)
  • Memento (-2 Attack, -2 Special Attack)
  • Obstruct (-2 Defense if opponent uses a contact move)
  • Screech (-2 Defense)
  • Captivate (-2 Special Attack)
  • Eerie Impulse (-2 Special Attack)
  • Acid Spray (-2 Special Defense)
  • Fake Tears (-2 Special Defense)
  • Metal Sound (-2 Special Defense)
  • Cotton Spore (-2 Speed)
  • Scary Face (-2 Speed)
  • String Shot (-2 Speed)
  • Gravity (All battlers' accuracy stats multiplied by 1.67x)
  • Sweet Scent (-2 Evasion)

Here are all moves that, when used by a Pokemon with Simple, will result in the desired tooltip:

  • Draco Meteor (-2 Special Attack)
  • Fleur Cannon (-2 Special Attack)
  • Leaf Storm (-2 Special Attack)
  • Overheat (-2 Special Attack)
  • Psycho Boost (-2 Special Attack)
  • Seed Flare (-2 Special Defense)

Bulbapedia on stat changes

There are a multitude of ways to get the "severely fell" tooltip, but none of them are particularly convenient or at all viable competitively. These tips are probably best suited to just messing around in the games.

The easiest way to do it, which doesn't require Contrary, Simple, or a cooperating opponent, is simply to build up 3 Stockpiles then have them wear off by using either Spit Up or Swallow. When your Stockpiles wear off, it will show the "severely fell" message for each defensive stat.
