I’ve been shiny hunting using the AFK method.
So far I’ve found most of Zone 3 encounters, but I’m starting to wonder what Pokemon are within the range and can be shiny.

The Pokemon I want, but I’m not sure if can be shiny, are:
- Emolga
- Trubbish
- Patrat
- Spritzee
- Cleffa
- Pikachu

The Pokemon outside of Area 3 I’ve found by this method have been:
- Pidgey x4
- Budew x3
- Fletchling x3
- Swirlix x1
- Scatterbug x9 (help)
- Vivilion x2

And for the ones I found within Area 3:
- Skiddo x6
- Espurr x5
- Litleo x11
- Flabebe x8
- Pamcham x5

Swirlix and Fletchlings were found in the marketplace left to Area 3. This has lead to me to believe that Trubbish in Rouge Sector 6 can be shiny by this method, along with the rooftop Emolgas and maybe Patrat.

The Budews and Scatterbugs were found in the roof too directly left of Zone 3.

I also have not found any Pokemon to the right of Zone 3.

So, what’s the actual range of the Zone 3 AFK methods?

I’m starting to wonder if Pikachu is out of the Zone 3 AFK range. Can anyone confirm if Pikachu is possible to get?

If you found Pokemon this method that I haven’t, please leave a comment to help us make a proper list.

Thank you!

You can always check by placing a marker at the Pokémon and going the place you are resetting. If they are within 50 metres then they can be shiny from the method
Oh, that’s actually a good idea. Thanks, I’ll give it a go next time
Your welcome :D
I think Pikachu can probably be shiny. I don't know about the others, though. I'll have to check the spawns.

Pokemon spawn in when they are about 50 units away from you. This means that anything that's within 50 units of the stairs can be hunted with this method. While I usually recommend dropping an in-game pin at the spot where you spawn in to check distances, it doesn't work perfectly here since doing so will put the pin at the top of the tower... Still, if you drop a pin next to the tower and walk away, it can give you an okay estimate of how far the radius extends laterally.

Serebii has this map of all the spawns in Lumiose City. Here, I've overlayed my best guess of what a 50 unit radius around the tower would look like and what the different spawns are:

map

This means that the Pokemon that can be rerolled using the stairs include:

  • 2-4x Litleo (1 guaranteed Alpha)
  • 1-3x Skiddo
  • 2x Fletchling (1 guaranteed Alpha)
  • 2x Flabebe
  • 1x Espurr
  • 1x Pidgey
  • 1x Vivillon
  • 1x Budew
  • 1x Goomy/Sliggoo (Rainy weather only)
  • 0-4x Pancham

(Note: There are 4 spawners that each have a 15% chance to spawn a Pancham instead of a Litleo or Skiddo.)

So overall, the results you reported are very typical! Unfortunately, all my best attempts at accurately measuring 50 units from the stairway seem to indicate that Pikachu is just barely out of reach, and this seems to be in line with your experimental data.

I don't think Swirlix is actually a valid spawn for this method—it's noticeably outside the 50 unit range, and the fact that you only caught 1 shiny despite having run enough rerolls to catch more than one of every other Pokemon with 1 spawn suggests that you actually just got lucky with that one when you were checking for shinies in the area.
