PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

So, I got Z-A for Christmas and was curious if I should just fire it up or if it’s beneficial to play any other versions beforehand? I had read there were references back to other games (xy, Arceus) but I was guessing that (like most Pokémon games) there wasn’t necessarily a “continuation” and I can just plug and play. So I guess the question boils down to is there a play through order for z-a and any other versions linked to it? Will I miss anything if I don’t? Try for no spoilers, please!

Haven't played it but, like most Pokemon games, the game will tell you what you need to know. Knowing recurring characters like Lysandre and AZ might be helpful, but you can learn about those in a quick XY lore video if need be.
knowing XY's plot would help, but the game tells you about it so it's not a big deal.
No. The only thing someone could say yes about would be The evil team, but even there you don't need X/Y

You don't need to play XY, Legends: Arceus, or any other game to understand Legends: Z-A. It's a bit of an odd one to start out with if someone has never played any Pokémon games before, but it shouldn't be confusing since the game does quite a lot differently and explains everything you'd need to know. It also starts off extremely slow-paced and has a lot of expository dialogue.

The story features a few returning characters and landmarks from XY, but not as many as you might expect, and with major changes—this was actually a prominent criticism from fans who were disappointed that they didn't see much of the Kalos that they were familiar with. On the flip side, this means that someone who plays Z-A first still has a lot of new things to see if they subsequently go back to play XY. The gameplay mechanics introduced in Legends: Arceus are easy to pick up and its story isn't relevant at all save for a few inconsequential references in a side quest area.

Thanks Hex! I’d been debating whether or not to fire it up. Great info here!
