how to cut down the tree in pokemon crystal

OK in Pokemon crystal there is a little dancing tree how do you cut it down to get to your next Gym battle?

I believe that you need the watering can and you use it on the sudowoodo and it will go away

After you beat Whitney, go to the store next door. Talk to the lady there and she will give you a watering can. Use that on the dancing tree, and the dancing tree will attack. It's a Sudowoodo.
