What is useful about the ability Storm Drain and Lightningrod?

Question

In double battles,the pokemon with the ability storm drain and lightningrod take all the damage from electric and water attacks instead of the other pokemon.What is so useful about that?

Lets say you have a Rydon with lightingrod, and a water type. instead of doing harsh damage when aimed at your water type, any electric move will hit rydon instead, who is immune- very helpful

And vice versa to protect rhydon if the water type has storm drain

Lightning rod is useful to protect your pokemon from electric attack in 2 on 2 battles. pokemon that are weak to those attacks can safely switch in. same for storm drain. If you have a pokemon with volt absorb or water absorb, try using charge beam or surf respectively, it will restore their health while damaging foes.

It protects it's ally. The bad thing is if the other pokemon has water absorb.
