A soft reset is when you save your game at an advantageous point and just reset the game if you mess something up, as the "reset" part implies.
This is handy with one time events like a legendary pokemon battle, where you only get one chance to catch the pokemon. Doing a soft reset gives you an infinite number of tries, in essence. The same idea could easily be applied for other situations too.
