As DT said, to balance out stats. However, this is not always the case. I prefer Skiploom over Hoppip for example. Although, Pokemon like Staryu have great moves. However, I would suggest just using your own Pokemon in the game, it is very hard to win with Rentals and very easy with your well trained team. Make sure they are all the same level though (my case, level 100.)
