What happens if you leave chat?

If I am on chat but then I go to meta without having chat open on another tab, does it make my name disappear or do I automatically go idle? Or do I only go idle after a certain period of time, like normal?

You only go idle if you have been in chat for around 10 minutes without saying anything. Also I'm sure that once you leave chat your username will be in the list for a short time before disappearing

To specifically answer this, if you go to another section of the site, it'll count it as leaving, even if you're at, let's say, your wall.
