How do I do a multiplayer battle in X&Y?

I can't find anything that will let me trade or battle with other players in the Pokemon center.

This took me longer than it should to figure out as well. All the interactivity features are now on the PSS (Player Search System) which is on the bottom screen. Press the arrows to switch between the screens (PSS, Amie, Super Training) then find the appropriate button on the PSS screen, e.g. GTS.

You have to use the PSS (Player Search System), which allows you to battle, trade, use GTS, use O-powers and use Game Sync. The PSS is located on the bottom screen (the yellow one), from which you can connect to the internet (the blue button at the top) or access the menu (the grey button at the top.)
