It makes it easy to know exactly who you're contacting with friend codes, but also remember that most Nintendo products are marketed to children. So, to keep them safe, they make it so you must have a friend code to make direct contact with someone for playing, that way it's not completely anonymous, and they start messing around with strangers that might try to cheat them out of pokemon or something to that effect.
