Does Machoke need to be holding an item, while being traded, to evolve?

I just evolved my machop into a machoke and I need to know how to get a machamp because he is awesome.

You're lucky!

Machoke doesn't need an item to evolve into Machamp. Just trade with a friend and get it back from him/her, and you have a Machamp.
