I'm playing Pokemon X and I found a wild Axew, so I caught it. Then a little later I found a wild Bagon and I'm deciding if I should use either Haxorus or Salamance

For In-game, I want to argue for Haxorus. Here are the reasons:

>1.Salamence actually takes a longer time to evolve
2. Most of the best moves Salamence gets are actually those that cannot be obtained through level up. Something like TMs, HMs, relearning, tutor etc and many of these are not available until later in the game.
3. You get Axew to evolve at a better level and it proves to be useful much more early on.
Besides, Fraxure usually does a better job compared to Shelgon.
4. Haxorus can make a whole lot better out of it's moves, with it's beastly attack stat.

But it comes down to personal preferance in the end, if you want to have a Pokemon that can also do the HMs for you, or simply like Salamence better, by all means, go for Salamence. Otherwise (in my opinion) Haxorus is better.

Hope I helped!

This helped quite alot but I still chose salamance for two reasons 1. I already used haxorus in pokemon white so I wanted something different  and 2. Salamance's stats are well balanced and it evovles in to shelgon first and only evolved in to salamance 2 levels higher so it really dosen't matter
In-game was the one time I didn't care less about stats.
One can make it through the whole game with just vivillons, and that is hardly an accomplishment lol
Go for whatever you like, you feel better completing the game with them rather than something you don't want :)
~ingame~
The only time you get to appreciate sweeping everything with a Delcatty. :)
My friend beat as w/ a pichu.
I still care about the stats about my ingame team and I plan them out on my y game and trade them to my as game, I even had a venusaur.

Since this is in-game, it doesn't really matter.

For in-game, just pick what you want to use more, maybe Haxorus since you can get better moves in it without breeding. But I am going to answer this for competitive as well.

Salamence for competitive.

My reasons being:

  • Higher BST(base stat total)
  • Higher special attack(if you want a mixed or even special set)
  • Higher speed
  • Moxie as an ability

Two sets I used in the past:

Salamence @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Outrage
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast

Salamence @ Life Orb
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast

And a mixed set in case you were interested in it:

Salamence @ Life Orb
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 64 Atk / 192 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Outrage
- Fire Blast
- Earthquake

Source: experience using Salamence a lot in Gen 5
Hope I helped.

I think he meant in-game though, these are competitive sets
Yeah, I edited the beginning of the answer to fit that.
after a dragon dance life orb doesn't do well because of the damage already taken, and sala could get OHKO'ed from a ice attack, so maybe focus sash or leftovers.
