I've been breeding out some Tyrouge's in Black, (yeah I'm behind) and been curious if it's ability as a Tyrouge (Guts / Steadfast) gives indication if, when evolving, what ability it'll get as say a Hitmonchan. Will one ability indicate it receiving iron fist as opposed to Keen Eye, or is it completely random in that aspect? And if it's not random, may someone inform me which of the two abilties a Tyrouge should have to guarantee Iron Fist as a Hitmonchan?

Yes, the ability of one of Tyrogue's evolutions can be predicted by Tyrogue's ability!

If you want an Iron Fist Hitmonchan you will need a Steadfast Tyrogue.

The "slot" storage system means that if an unevolved Pokémon has the "first" Ability for its species, it will have the "first" Ability of its evolved species upon reaching this stage, even if this Ability differs in the evolved species. In other words, a Poochyena with Run Away would evolve into a Mightyena with Intimidate, while a Poochyena with Quick Feet would evolve into a Mightyena with Quick Feet.

Tyrogue and evolutions
So, as you can see from this picture if your Tyrogue has Steadfast as it's ability, then when it evolves:

  • Hitmonlee will have Reckless
  • Hitmonchan will have Iron Fist
  • Hitmontop will have Technician

lol Scraf, go to PS! and look at Heracross, Aerodactyl, Aggron, Alakazam, Arcanine, Chandelure, Goodra, Kingdra, Lucario, Mienshao, Milotic, Porygon2, Scrafty, Trevenant, etc.
Are those abilities in alphabetical order? :p

Also if they were alphabetical Iron Fist would come before Keen Eye for Hitmonchan....
Ah, thank you very much.  Now I can resume breeding and not stress over vain efforts.
Don't mind me
