Can you see if a starter is shiny before you battle with it in BW?

I mean during the cut scene where the present is open and the three starters are shown, are they visibly shiny at this point or do you have to battle Bianca to find out if it's shiny?

You have to battle Bianca

In order to see if a shiny Pokemon is shiny you must initiate a battle with Bianca as it doesn't appear when opening the present.
