When you look at the evolutions of certain Pokemon it says trade, what does 'trade' mean in these terms?

It means exactly that, trade.

To clarify, if it says trade to evolve, the Pokemon must be link traded, even through Wonder Trade or GTS (if it's in those generations) to evolve. After the trade takes place, the Pokemon will evolve.
