Can you still interact with the Pokemon you assign to defend a gym in Pokemon Go?

Ok so I'm honestly not sure if anyone could answer this for me, but here's the question with a little more detail..

Is it possible to still interact, (such as powering up your Pokemon), with your Pokemon once it is assigned to defend a gym? To be a bit more clear with the question, I'm basically asking if I can still interact with my Pokemon when being nowhere near the gym I assigned it to defend after capturing it?

No, you cannot. I just tried it with my Tauros, which as at a gym, and it wouldn't let me.
