Well you see... i've never had a Shiny in My Pearl game and back then, I didn't know what a Shiny Was......
as I type this question, I'm hatching Riolus xp
Prior to Gen 6 (XY) the rate for encountering shiny Pokemon was 1/8192. The Masuda Method raises the chances by 5, up to 5/8192 (or about 1/1838).
