I have heard this and I am curious. Also, what are the differences between them? What are the similarities?

Square and “star” (regular) shinies. It’s just a difference in the sparkles that the Pokémon give off. They will be square shaped if it’s a square shiny and star shaped if it’s a star shiny.

Hope this helps! :)

Ok.  Thanks!
No problem! :)
Game Freak actually coined the term "ultra shiny" a year before the release of Pokemon sword and shield. Square shiny is not an official name, altho I do use it often xd. Source:https://youtu.be/Ddb467OQpmY
From personal experience, 1/16 for squares while breeding is accurate. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wild-caught star shiny, neither from personal experience nor from hours of looking on r/shinypokemon. I suspect that the chances of stars in the wild is much lower than 1/16.
KRLW890 it is 1/16 for wild encounters. Those are the odds that serebii shows
