Does poltergeist work on a Pokemon holding an item with klutz?

I know that klutz can affect moves like fling and prevent choice/trick but does it protect it from poltergeist? Even though it has an item, it does not act like it has the item.

Poltergeist deals damage if the target is holding an item, after displaying the message "[target] is about to be attacked by its [item]!" If used when the target is not holding an item, Magic Room is active, or the target's Ability is Klutz, the move fails.
