Does the missingno glitch work on virtual console?

I want to do the missingno glitch to try and duplicate my items in Pokemon yellow. However, I'm not sure if it still works or if it corrupts my game or anything like that. Does it still work?

Dude wtf? I just tried it and my game crashed, and when I reopened it my game file was destroyed. Why did this happen?
