What does the /alts command do in Pokémon Showdown?

Question

I saw something saying it was for seeing past battles but instead it showed a private number. Can other people see that number? I typed it into general chat like an idiot but I did just make my account so there is a chance no one could see it. When I clicked on that number it showed some information I did not understand.

The Beginner's Guide for Smogon doesn't list the /alts command for some reason, so I asked TGA, who is Voice is the Help room.

Here's what he said:

The "private number" you're talking about is your IP address. But don't worry, no one other than you can see the information given by the alts command, or the alts message itself. That goes for all commands starting with "/" -- they're meant only for you to see.

When I used the /alts command for the first time even I thought I leaked my IP to hundreds of people, so I asked a staff member to clear my message but they said only I can see the /alts message.

Fwiw for alt checks, there's ~alts. It's a Global Voice+ (some Trusted+ can do it too) thing, which shows only your recent alts. It uses IP to show the alts, but doesn't show the IP address.
