I want to find out how to calculate damage so I can find a good tank.

There are too many variables and threats to consider. It's much easier to use whichever Pokemon other people say are useful.

It doesn't matter which side you put either Pokemon in the calculator because it finds damage ranges for both of them.

Easy way to calculate damage:
click this link
click your generation
put 2 Pokemon into the damage calculator (it doesn't matter which is the attacker and which is the defender)
give an attack move to the attacker
set all the variables that might affect damage. This usually includes level, EVs, nature, and stat changes.
