What happens if you beat Ho-oh instead of catching it (HG/SS)?

Question

I’m currently playing through Pokemon Heart gold trying to get to fuchsia so that I can transfer gen 3 Pokemon to the switch. I also want to hunt a shiny Ho-oh however I want to get to fuchsia first, if I beat Ho-oh instead of catching it will I be able to rematch and catch it after I beat the game?

I have beaten the elite 4twice after defeating ho oh still hasent reappeared what do I need to do?

Legendaries only respawn after beating the E4 in Platinum onwards.

If you defeat Ho-oh, you’ll get another to catch it after you defeat the Elite 4.

One more chance? I’m pretty sure you can never lose the opportunity to catch it, just beat the elite 4 again.

If you're playing Crystal, then once you've KO'd it once, you're out of luck. You need to start a new save file or trade. This answer is for HG/SS.
