In Pokemon Gold post Diglett cave, there are no trees to cut, so I am unable to go to Pewter City?

Check the map under “route 2” and try again. If that doesn’t help, please upload a photo of what you’re seeing.

This map shows a cuttable tree in G/S/C Route 2 outside of Diglett Cave. Do you not see that tree? If not, you should be able to go down a ways and cut a tree down lower & then follow Route 2 back up to Pewter City.

Unless I'm missing something here, I remember Kanto being very easy to navigate in Gen 2.
