PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

So, I’m about to embark on Sw soon. (Wife just started Sh a day or two ago.) As I have never played “newer” PKMN games (I’m a Red, Blue, Yellow to LGP gamer) can someone break down how I know if a Poké has a hidden ability, as in is it present as a second ability or is only 1 present? Does it actually SHOW the HA is present under your ability description? Trying to grasp all the changes since OG Pokémon. Thanks guys.

And for the record, I combed through other questions and couldn’t find anything similar to answer.
its too late for me to formulate an answer but basically itll just tell u the ability n u can look up if that ability is its ha or not lolz
it shows up in the regular ability slot. you just get the one ability per pokemon. it won't show up as special or anything. take eevee for example: https://pokemondb.net/pokedex/eevee

if you get an eevee with run away or adaptability, it's a regular ability eevee.
if it has anticipation, that's it's hidden ability.

you just kinda gotta check online or know.

just sidenote, you can't easily find HA's. there's certain methods to getting them
I appreciate you and everyone else Silver!

Each species has three ability slots. Two of these are reserved for abilities that the species could have when you encounter it under normal circumstances. The third is the hidden ability (HA).

For example, Nidoking has the following slots:

  • Slot #1: Poison Point
  • Slot #2: Rivalry
  • Hidden Ability: Sheer Force

Sheer Force is "hidden" in the sense that Nidoking will never be spawned with Sheer Force under normal circumstances. Once you do get a Nidoking with Sheer Force (which would require some special technique or encounter method), there is nothing hidden about it. The game will show it in menus like any other ability.

In case it isn't clear, a Pokemon can only have one of its species possible abilities at once. HAs are not additional abilities.

First question: I believe the only way to see (in the game, you can always check on the Internet) is to see if an Ability Patch is compatible with it. This will mean that is does have a hidden ability.

Second question: No, you will only see its current ability, and not whether it is hidden or not.
