I always thought that the odds max out at 1/273 after a combo of 31, and then you just sit there until a shiny appears. I've seen many streamers or Youtubers hunt this way before.

But I've also seen hunters have combos into the hundreds, claiming that the 1/273 odds only extends to the next encounter of the Pokemon you're hunting.

So which is it?

The hunters that continue their catch combos are correct: the boosted shiny odds only apply to the next Pokemon of that species to spawn. Just waiting for a shiny to spawn after reaching a combo of 31 will not do anything — odds-wise, it's as if you never caught any Pokemon at all.
