Platinum - Does catching a Pokemon count as a win and trigger the pickup ability?

I have had no success with 5 lv. 41 pachirisu with pickup and havent gotten any items

Yes, you don’t even need to win. You can flee, too.
It’s only a 10%.
Make sure your pachirisu actually has Pickup and not Run Away.
It can’t be holding an item already, too

edit: i would like to apologize for speeding incorrect info! I stated this because i thought, from experience, this was the case, but I must've misremembered. i still believe fleeing counts in some games, but please assume i'm wrong until proven otherwise

Pulled straight off Bulbapedia. Fleeing wouldn't count as winning, and capture may not, as it doesn't award EXP in older games.

I’d argue that fleeing isn’t loosing, as it isn’t a whiteout, and bulapedia can be wrong. This is something I can probably test.

I caught 15 Pokemon with a party of 6 pickup Pachirisus. If pickup does work on captures, the chance that it didn't work here would be (1 - 10%)^(6 * 15), which is roughly 1/13,127 and is less than the chance of finding a shiny Pokemon in this game. Therefore, pickup probably doesn't work on captures.

Then I tried attacking the Pokemon, and I defeated just 5 of them before I got 3 pickups.
