How exactly do you get Wi-Fi?

I'v heard something about a router? How exactly do you get Wi-Fi? What equipment do you need?

My Dad says you need something like a "N" class router (I don't exactly know what that is.). Yes, you need a router. I'm have yet to get Wifi myself.
