When is a good time to use 'Focus punch'

Question

Sometimes it works, sometimes I get hit.

I'm thinking about using it at first of battle when they are sword dancing/nasty plotting/calm minding.

Suggestions?

It's a good idea to run Substitute when you're using a Pokemon with Focus Punch, since when the Pokemon is behind the sub it will always be able to pull off the Focus Punch unless the opponent uses a move such as Bullet Seed which can hit through the sub, but such scenario is unlikely.

That is why you NEVER use Focus Punch on an Ambipom, Cinccino, or Scizor.
