Why is there a point system?

The reason I'm asking is because alot of people just join the site for points.

Point system was here because once you reached a certain number of points you got the editor stats, then once you get more points you would get the expert stats. But now points are not all that useful

It's expert then editor ;) also it gives people something to think about and ask questions, it makes the site more interesting after all the experts and mods and editors used to be handpicked.
