The points system is an indirect reputation system. Naturally, if you look at someone with a high amount of points you know that their answers will be top quality.
It also gives you an idea of how experienced they are with the site as people with a really high amount of points will of most likely been involved with the DB in great depth.

What Pokemaster means about "points don't matter" is that when looking at promotions or a users reputation, there are other main factors that will stand out and that points shouldn't be the main attribute to that user.
