Meta-PokéBase Q&A

When I go to the pages of some Pokémon on this site under the list of dex entries is a rectangle (to display ads) with 6 little pictures that have words under them saying where it will take you if you click the picture. It usually always leads to pages of other Pokémon on this site or "What is a good moveset" threads. Sometimes it won't appear but why advertise your own site? How does that even make you money?

That's all, thanks in advance!

It looks like the Google Ads, I don't see them at all
More ads were discovered: https://imgur.com/a/eeDaQMt - https://imgur.com/a/sei5slq

@Staka - I guess Pokemaster wants to make a few dollars off of this site.
PM uses Google Ads in order to run adverts on the site (iirc). I think the advertising isn't intentional at all, but it might be Google trying to show more commonly accessed pages as part of their ad service for the site
@Rick Gastly - Interesting.
Websites that aren’t run for business use ads to cover server costs. Sizeable sites like this one cost a fair bit to host.
Pokemaster wouldn’t profit much from running a Pokémon fan site, especially since this site is sparing in its ad usage.

It’s a new type of ad I was trying. It’s not entirely an ad, it’s mostly a “related pages” feature that sometimes has ads on it. Part of the idea (according to Google) is that by recommending other pages, people spend more time on the site.

As Hex suggested it could be made without the ads but as always that takes time to code and to decide what pages should be related to each other. Google probably knows more about what different pages people visit than I do! Having said that, it often seems quite random in what it recommends. I’m not entirely sold on it but it seems nice enough.

Feel free to comment if you like/hate it :)

Thanks :). But what happened to the old ads that didn't advertise this site? I'd never click those DB ads because I probably wouldn't have to (I usually never click any ad). In my opinion, I don't need an ad to show me to different parts of this site. When I need to go to a certain page on this site then I just search for it. But, advertising questions from Pokébase could attract people if they're interested (unlike just going to another page for a Pokémon). Most people who have an account on this site already spend lots of time here (like me). At least now I know what you're doing.
The "related pages" thing is only on some pages, and does have some ads mixed in there sometimes. There are still ads on the rest of the site, although I actually have a setting that only shows ads 40% of the time (because a lot of ads don't get clicked on and showing 60% less ads only loses 1% money). So the ads are fairly minimal.
Okay. <space>
