It's not better. At the time it was a big deal. They changed more about breeding between 2 to 3 than any other transition. Plus they changed a lot more too. I got used to breeding in 3, so that's what I like best. Steel has been my favorite type since Gen 2 so Metagross was a bonus too. Can't forget about that famous Gen 3 OP Psychic. Metagross was the whole package. It was basically what it is now except with resistance to ghost, dark, and almost immunity to bug (unlike Gen 4).

So if you like breeding, why is it better than the gen 4 mechanics?

In one word: Breeding. My favorite part about Pokemon has always been building a Pokemon to its greatest potential. With Gen 3 came huge changes to how breeding works, specifically in Emerald, which is my favorite version. I liked Emerald so much I inadvertently memorized every square XD So that's why it's my favorite... and I forbid anyone to have a different opinion ;p
