How do we know about EVs without looking at the code?

Well what I mean is that, does the game tell you or hint about the EV training?

In the games, they do not hint about the existance of EVs.The closest is when receiving the Effort Ribbon.
In multiple guidebooks that are released, they do mention EVs, but not how many maxes out each stat.
We know the EV process because you when through the game cartridge.
