My Poke Radar chain breaks off, why?

I'm trying to catch a shiny noctowl and when ever I'm above 30 encounters in my chain, the chain breaks off and then i'll have to start over again :( HELP PLEASE!!!

It maybe because you stepped in the wrong patch of grass, or you went into one of the X spots.
A Chain usually ends in 30-40

That's not a good guide for shiny chaining; he doesn't get quite a few things right. Also I can only assume that the question is asking about Platinum because their previous questions asked about Platinum?
