Will automatic center happen in an actual Pokemon game?

For those of you who don't know what automatic center is:

it happens in triple battles; when your the opponent's Pokemon are non-adjacent to each other and are the only 2 Pokemon left on the field, they both get automatically moved to the center spots in their respective sides.

It happened to me in Pokemon Showdown.

Basically, knock out 2 of their Pokemon on the opposite side of the Pokemon you want remaining. Then make your Pokemon faint. The two Pokemon will automatically be shifted to the center.
